Willowood at Mustang Senior Living residents Kenneth and Nuiko Hartwig have been together for 64 happy years and married for over 50! The adorable couple recently shared their long-lasting love story with us.

Kenneth and Nuiko, please tell us how the two of you first met.

Kenneth: Well, we first met in 1957, when Nuiko was 21 and I was only 20 years old and working as a United States contractor in Tokyo, Japan.

Nuiko: At the time, I was working at a local golf course in Tokyo, and on the American military base at the exchange store. Kenneth golfed a lot, so it wasn't by chance that we met, since I opened the golf course each morning at 6:00 a.m.!

What were your first impressions of one another?

Kenneth: I thought Nuiko was very pretty and nice, and she was a hard worker too!

Nuiko: I thought he was good looking, and the fact that he wasn't a playboy but he had a really good job helped too. I didn't want to be with a GI, and I liked that he played golf. As often as he played, I thought he could teach me. However, I thought he was silly for playing golf at 6:30 a.m. in the morning!

What would you do for dates in those early days?

Kenneth: We went to the civilian club, the officers club, and a non-commissioned officers club. We always loved going out to restaurants with good food and service. In those days, I traveled a lot, and Nuiko worked two jobs. I would come home from my travels and take her out to a nice restaurant, before leaving again for another job.

When and where did you get married?

We got married in 1967 at the American embassy in Bern Switzerland. The best part of our wedding was that we both showed up!

Tell us about your life (jobs, travel, family) before moving to Willowood at Mustang Senior Living:

Nuiko: After we got married, we moved to Germany and lived there for 12 years, and we had two daughters. The only reason we came back to the states, was because we wanted our girls to have the best education and go to college.

What would you say is the secret to a good marriage?

We both feel that being understanding and communicating well with one another is the key to living a long and happy life together.

What about the secret to a life lived well?

Nuiko: It's him, he is my secret to a life lived well. Just Kenneth. Without him, my life wouldn't have been the same!

Thank you for telling us your story, Kenneth and Nuiko. We wish you many more happy years together!
